Costume

Items of costume can be extremely varied. Commissions have ranged from an 18th century mantua, to a christening robe or even a dress worn by Marilyn Monroe.

Costumes are always challenging owing to the three dimensional element of their construction. The Consultancy has accumulated considerable expertise in the reconstruction of period costume by tracing back the layers of information revealed by the stitches.

This dress was originally made in the 1860's but altered for wear later in the 19th century and then again in 1988. It was not possible to return this dress to its original shape as too much had been cut away. However, through the evidence left behind by the original stitch holes, it was possible to return the dress to a silhouette of the late 1890's tempered with a feeling of 1860.
