Militaria

Military items are extremely varied and include uniforms, boots and helmets as well as banners and flags - all of which are made from many different materials.

Banners are often very fragile items that have been on open display for decades and may be literally falling apart. They require special treatments.

In the case of the Newark banner conservation involved cleaning, support and re-dispaly. The support was provided by applying fabric to one side of the banner useing an adhesive technique, the original material being too brittle to withstand stitching. Once conserved it was not recommended that the banner should be returned to open display. The safest option was to mount it on board and then encase it in glass.
